While you might be tempted to try and repair your garage door yourself, you'd be better off rethinking it. DIY garage door repairs can be difficult, expensive, and most importantly, dangerous.

The rollers that slide your door up and down are more crucial to its proper operation than you may think. Be sure to clean and grease/oil these occasionally. The springs may also be the source of the issue. If they aren't lubricated properly, they could stick or even break.

If your garage door is not opening or closing correctly there could be a number of reasons that include, broken springs, misalignment of the tracks, malfunctioning sensors, or the photo-eye is out of alignment. These of course are just a few examples of what may need to be repaired.

In most cases, the cause will be a stripped gear or a chain that has come off the sprocket. If this is the case, the motor will run, but as the chain isn't where it should be, it can't generate the lift to open the door. You may also find that your motor won't work as the emergency release has become jammed.
